On table eight, with no stacks particularly deep and multiway pots minimal, it’s not so easy to pick up chips.
In one hand in level 9, Jeffrey Hong thought he had found the classic sure way of making money in NLHE: flop a set. He had opened from UTG, and faced a short stack shove from Andrew Cooper in late position.
Hong checked the count to be sure, but he was never really folding with no depth. Andrew declared “johnnies” and Hong groaned, turning over two eights.
No problem. The flop came . “There it is,” sighed Cooper.
However, the solved things for Cooper, who doubles to 100,000.
“I felt there would be an eight,” said Cooper.
“I knew there would be a jack,” said Hong.
Then, Joey B, two to Hong’s right, took a nice pot with a set of jacks himself.
In the next hand, the now dwindling Hong was in the BB, and faced an open from Cooper and a flat in field. With only 28 bigs left, he had to start managing his calls. Jeffrey decided this spot was worth it.
However, the flop apparently offered no help to Hong, and was forced to fold his investment to Cooper’s cbet. Jeffrey has a little more than 40,000 to work with.
